An Inaugural Summit Of Black Mayors’ Against Crime

Challenge

A new Mayor of Memphis, Paul Young, aimed to address the city’s crime problem. Central to his campaign was reaching out to collaborators, his peers, and his community.

Solution

We developed the idea of the Black Mayors’ Coalition on Crime to unite mayors facing similar issues in their cities. Mayor Young invited mayors from across the country to take part. We collaborated with partners like the Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ) and the African American Mayors Association (AAMA). We created a comprehensive, private agenda and set the foundation for ongoing action.

Results

  • The inaugural Black Mayors’ Coalition on Crime was a resounding success, with over 20 mayors and partners participating in the two-day event. Insights and successful programs were exchanged, with consensus around the table for the shared drivers of crime in each city. The event laid the foundation for groundbreaking collaboration and a shared mission to tackle the issue of crime in some of our nation’s cities.
